Pons riders happy with double top five

Pons HP 40 pairing Maverick Viñales and Luis Salom were content with having finished fourth and fifth in Sunday’s French GP, with Maverick Viñales having finished in front following a spirited battle with team-mate Luis Salom.

Salom started third on the grid with Viñales seventh, although it was the latter who eventually finished ahead of his team-mate.

"I’m happy with the weekend," said Viñales, who won Round 2 in Austin. "We did a good job throughout practice on Friday and Saturday. With the race, I knew I had to make a good start and I succeeded. The group was broken up, but I was able to circulate very quickly and begin to catch up and hunt down those at the front. We have to keep working because we still lack a little bit, but I think we can be satisfied with the result and I want to thank the team for the work we are doing together."

Salom had finished on the podium in Argentina and on this occasion was looking for another strong points finish, which he achieved.

"I am pleased because I think we did a good race, fighting for the podium throughout," Salom begins. "Towards the end, I was getting a bit nervous and ran wide a few times. When I tried battling with Tito (Rabat), Maverick was able to overtake me; I tried to respond to that, but ran wide again, so after that I just tried to maintain the fifth position."

Five races into the campaign and with 13 remaining, Viñales sits third in the Riders’ Championship with 62 points to his name, while Salom is seventh with 39 – matching his race number. Their next destination will be Mugello in Italy, where in 2013 Salom won the Moto3™ race while Viñales completed the podium in third spot.
