Lowes leads the Moto2™ pack on day two in Jerez

Lowes leads the Moto2™ pack on day two in Jerez

British rider Sam Lowes topped the timesheets after the first session in Jerez, with conditions having improved from the first day.

After a cloudy and wet start to the morning with an air temperature of 14 degrees, the rain eased off and the track started to dry as the Moto2™ riders took to the circuit for the first time today. The track was still rather damp at the start of the session, after a damp start to the morning, with all of the teams opting to use wet tyres to begin with.

With ten minutes to go in the first session a dry racing line had appeared around the 4.4 km circuit, and riders took advantage of this to switch to slicks, meaning the lap-times dropped dramatically as conditions continued to improve.

It was Speed Up Racing’s Lowe’s who managed the fastest lap of 1’44.129, over two seconds slower than the best time at the previous test at the circuit in February, but 1.078s quicker than the German Jonas Folger in 2nd and better than anything the Moto2™ riders could achieve in the wet on the first day.

Swiss rider Thomas Luthi on the Derendinger Racing Interwetten Kalex was a further three-hundredths back, with Takaaki Nakagami, who was bottom of the overall timesheets on day one, improving to finish in 4th, 1.522s off the pace of Lowes.

Randy Krummenacher on the JIR Racing Team Kalex finished in 5th, the same position he occupied on the combined standings after the end of day one. Azlan Shah, Nakagami’s teammate, rounded out the top 6 finishing less than a tenth behind his teammate and 0.139s ahead of the reigning Moto2™ Champion Tito Rabat in 7th.

Teams will hope the weather stays dry to allow them to make the most of the 2nd day of testing at the Circuito de Jerez, with a further two sessions planned in the afternoon.
