Luthi: “This podium was unexpected”

Thomas Luthi claimed the first ever Moto2™ podium for the newly formed Derendinger Racing Interwetten team in Qatar.

The Swiss rider finished third after managing to resist the attack of young Spaniard Alex Rins in the closing stages of the race in Moto2™, to snatch the last podium spot in his team's first ever race.

Thomas Luthi:
"This podium was unexpected for sure but it is very nice to take. I continue to learn the new bike and in the race I understood a lot of new things. My start wasn't bad but at the beginning I had a bad position on the outside and found myself on the dirty side of the track. I wanted to react immediately, I was fighting back and experiencing some problems while overtaking; the confidence with the front of my bike was not quite there yet and I couldn't brake as hard as I am used to. That is why I lost quite a bit of time, especially behind Kallio, Morbidelli and then Cortese. Luck was on my side this time. I took advantage of the problems of some of my rivals and what I appreciate as much as the result, is the progress that we have made during this weekend. My crash in warm-up? I was on the limit - that is how one can understand a race machine; luckily I did not hurt myself and my mechanics were able to save the bike quickly and give me a brand new machine! Thanks to all my staff and the whole team who worked with us for the first time, we understand each other better every day and I know that we can do incredible things together!"
