Lorenzo sets fastest ever lap as Marquez misses out

Jorge Lorenzo recorded the fastest ever lap around Mugello as Marc Marquez finishes in eleventh and will have to battle it out in Q1.

Movistar Yamaha’s Lorenzo smashed the pole record (1’47.157) set by Dani Pedrosa in 2013 at the Autodromo de Mugello by over half a second as he managed a 1’46.967 to top FP3. The big shock though was the fact the reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez missed out on automatic qualification to Q2, and will have to make it through from the first Qualifying session, as he finished down in eleventh.

In what was an incredible end to FP3, riders headed out on the softer option tyres available to them and the last five minutes became like an extra Qualifying session in the perfect conditions at the Tuscany track.

It was a good session for Italian fans as local boy Andrea Iannone (+0.0391s) was second, with his teammate Andrea Dovizioso (+0.496s) in third, while the Ducati Team test rider, Michele Pirro (+0.544s), made it three GP15’s in a row as he managed to take fourth spot.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Pol Espargaro (+0.558s) was next up in fifth as the leading Satellite rider, ahead of the CWM LCR Honda of Cal Crutchlow (+0.593s) in sixth.

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) was in seventh, ahead of Bradley Smith, Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales who completed the top ten, and all make it through automatically to Q2.

Scott Redding will also have to take part in Q1 as he could only manage to set the twelfth fastest time while Loris Baz (Athina Forward Racing) was the leading Open class rider in 16th.

Check out the full combined results from MotoGP™ Free Practice; Qualifying 1 kicks off at 14:10 local time in Mugello.
