Capirossi looks ahead to #ItalianGP

Capirossi looks ahead to #ItalianGP

Former Italian MotoGP™ rider Loris Capirossi gives his thoughts on who will win the MotoGP™ race at the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM in Mugello.

Capirossi, who has won before at Mugello (500cc - 2000) and has a further three premier class podiums to his name at the Tuscany track, is now the Safety Officer for Dorna Sports who own the MotoGP™ World Championship. He chatted to ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, to give us his thoughts on who might win and what it is like to ride in front of such a passionate and partisan crowd.

The Italian Grand Prix is always a very special moment for Italian riders. Does the atmosphere at Mugello spur them on more?

That is right! I have always ridden there with amazing support. Every time I arrived at Mugello, it gave me an extra boost, it was amazing, the fans give you an extra two or three tenths of a second a lap that can make a real difference. The atmosphere is very special, and you can feel this as soon as you head out on to the track.

You won the race at Mugello in 2000 after a duel with Rossi and Biaggi, plus you have three MotoGP™ podiums to your name with Ducati, with the last being back in 2006. How special were these moments?

I have incredible memories of the 2000 season; I was in the satellite Pons Team after stepping from the 250cc class, and had to fight incredibly hard for the win. In the last few laps, I was involved in a battle with Valentino and Max, but both crashed, and I found myself on the start-finish straight all by myself. I managed to bring home an incredible victory in front of one of all of my fans, on a bike that is stil very special to me.

I managed three podiums with Ducati, the last one in 2006 after a great fight with Valentino. Winning at Mugello is simply the best feeling in the world, and when you look down form the podium and see all of those fans cheering you on, it makes you feel like you are on top of the world!

Who do you think will win this year?

Good question, I think a number of people can win! Valentino is in great form, Lorenzo is back to his best, Marquez is desperate for a win and Ducati are scarily quick around their home track. It is very difficult to say who will win, because it really could be anyone of these.
