Viñales tops FP3 as last gasp Rossi makes it through to Q2

Maverick Viñales sets the fastest time of the weekend to top the combined timesheets ahead of his teammate Aleix Espargaro.

In a dramatic end to Free Practice 3 Viñales pulled out a 1’41.105 to end the session on top of the combined timesheets, just 0.053s ahead of his teammate Espargaro and Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo, as riders made their bid to make it through to Q2 automatically.

Andrea Dovizioso (+0.279s) on the Ducati Team GP15 was fourth fastest ahead of Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez (+0.338s) in fifth, with Pol Espargaro (+0.368s) on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 the leading Satellite rider in an impressive sixth at his home circuit.

Valentino Rossi left it extremely late to secure his passage through to Q2 as he set the seventh fastest time in the dying seconds of the session. The Italian ensuring in dramatic fashion that he would not have to battle it out in Q1 for the first time since Aragon last season.

Cal Crutchlow (CWM LCR Honda), Yonny Hernandez (Octo Pramac Racing) and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) completed the top ten and made it through to Q2.

Big name riders who will have to battle it out in Q1, include Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa (11th), Andrea Iannone on the Ducati Team GP15 (12th) and Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS’s Scott Redding (13th). Aspar MotoGP Team duo Nicky Hayden and Eugene Laverty finished in 19th and 23rd respectively.
