Laverty: “I've got a good feeling with the bike”

A last minute phone call has Michael Laverty back racing in the MotoGP™ paddock, eager to continue developing the Aprilia.

Joining his brother on the grid for the first time in MotoGP™, Michael Laverty steps in to replace Marco Melandri in the Aprilia Racing Team Gresini garage having already ridden as Aprilia’s test rider. This testing role meant that Laverty came into the weekend with at least a slight idea of what to expect from the prototype Aprilia. Despite an issue in FP2 Laverty was able to impress many.

At the end of Friday practice Laverty was just 1.2 seconds behind teammate Alvaro Bautista, a smaller gap than Melandri had ever achieved. This impressive result came while continuing to test various parts and setting for the Italian team. He would end Friday in 24th with a time of 1’24.446.

Michael Laverty: “In FP1 I felt very comfortable in the saddle every time I went out onto the track and in fact I did my best time in the last run. In the afternoon unfortunately I was only able to get one clean run in at the end of the session so I wasn't able to improve. In general I've got a good feeling with the bike. There's room for improvement in terms of grip. Today I tried the rear suspension link like the one Alvaro uses briefly and it seems to make things a bit better, so tomorrow I'll try it on both bikes.”
