Lowes: “I tried a new chassis and it was like a new bike!”

Lowes: “I tried a new chassis and it was like a new bike!”

Friday practice allowed Sam Lowes to test a new Speed Up frame, collecting valuable future data.

The changes from 2014 to 2015 have been drastic for Lowes (Speed Up Racing), the Brit regularly able to challenge for the podium this year after his 2014 season was plagued with crashes. On just second lap of the day Lowes was already faster than his best time from 2014, highlighting his dramatic improvements. Despite this he and the Speed Up factory are still working hard, bringing a new frame this weekend.

Free Practice 2 was spent testing the frame, with a hectic race schedule there’s very little time for teams and riders to spend a weekend testing so all track time is used. The frame did not bring the changes that Lowes or Speed Up had hoped but the data collected does give them an idea of what needs changing for the future.

Sam Lowes: “I’ve had a really good day, last year it was really tough. I think my second lap of the day was already better than my best lap last year which shows we were no where near last year! This morning was really good, I had a really good feeling with lots of fast laps. In the afternoon I tried a new chassis and it was like a new bike! It wasn’t too bad, we were fifth but it wasn’t as good as this morning. This is normal when you try something new like this. With this part of the season, with no testing, it was good to try it. For tomorrow we’ll go back to the old one, as it didn’t really do what we though. But we got a lot of data and maybe we’ll try it again in the coming races. That said, it has been a really good day as we’re fastest overall and not too far with the new chassis. It’s a tight track so the times are really close and there’s a big mix of riders. I’m already looking forward to the race but Qualifying will be a really important here.”
