Zarco: “Every year I struggle a bit here”

Moto2™ championship leader Zarco didn’t find the going easy on the opening day of practice at the GoPro Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland.

With a top ten slit by less than 0.3, where you finished in Free Practice for Moto2™ was almost a lottery. In this tight contest Ajo Motorsport’s Johann Zarco finished seven at the end of the day, his best lap coming during Free Practice One. Sachsenring is a track that Zarco has classically struggled at, in 2014 his bike burst into flames after he crashed at Turn 12.

This weekend Zarco has focused on finding a good feeling on used tyres, beginning FP1 with a run of 14 laps. Of all his race simulation laps Zarco set 17 in the 1’25s, just three seconds off the pace of Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP). All things are looking promising for race day, but with the Moto2™ field so close anything could happen during Qualifying and securing a solid grid slot will be vital.

Johann Zarco: “Things are ok. It’s not an easy circuit, every year I struggle a bit here and it’s hard to find a good pace on every lap, but this year I have more possibilities of seeing where I can go fast. In the morning I saw where my weak spots are, and I tried to work on them. Physically, it is a very demanding circuit because you are leaned over to the left –but I am ready to resist. The most important thing is enjoying yourself on the bike. We are going step-by-step, the feeling is coming and I am keeping smiling.”
