Zarco: “I have picked up important points”

He may not have achieved victory, but Zarco was able to significantly increase his lead.

It was a tough race for the Zarco’s championship rivals, Sam Lowes (Speed Up Racing) struggled to a distant fifth while an injured Tito Rabat (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Racing) was taken out at the final corner. Neither really played a major role in the Ajo Motorsport rider’s race at any point, the Frenchman instead contending with Xavier Simeon (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) and Franco Morbidelli (Italtrans Racing) throughout the race. At various stages it seemed that Zaroc may have created enough of a gap to break away, but both responded.

Simeon would go on to claim victory, Zarco holding back from a risky last corner lunge instead settling for second. Meanwhile drama unfolded behind them as Morbidelli lost the front at Turn 13, taking Rabat down with him. As a result Zarco not sits on 179 points, Rabat on 114 resulting in a gap of 65 points in the Moto2™ Champion, a big hurdle to overcome. Zarco heads into the summer break satisfied with his first half of the season.

Johann Zarco: “On the last lap I rode as close to Simeon as I could to try to force a mistake, but it wasn’t to be. I was leading with some comfort and I was surprised when, at the end, he passed me. Even though my move to pass him back failed, I'm happy.  It is a shame that Tito [Rabat] crashed and I hope he is not hurt, but for me second place is a great result. I have picked up important points for the championship, I have a good advantage and I go into the break satisfied. I’m focused on winning at Indianapolis. Thanks to the team.”
