Lorenzo: “Every change we made we were able to improve”

Classically the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix has been a Honda track, but it was Lorenzo’s Yamaha that led the way on Friday.

Fresh from the summer break, Jorge Lorenzo immediately got to work on his Movistar Yamaha MotoGP machine leading FP1. Each year Indianapolis represents a great obstacle on the first day, as the track condition is less than ideal. But Lorenzo quickly got a feel for the US track and led for much of the first practice session.

The afternoon saw temperatures rise and the battle on track intensified as Lorenzo and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) battled for the top spot in FP2. Both riders have an illustrious history at the track, Marquez having won on four occasions and Lorenzo having six MotoGP™ podiums. As their battle devolved into a last minute shoot out, Lorenzo produced a 1’32.860 to lead the day.

Jorge Lorenzo: “I‘m very happy, because with every change we made we were able to improve the bike a bit. I‘m riding very well and had a good feeling with the bike so I was able to ride close to the limit for the moment. We had the same sensation with the harder tyre, while other riders had used a new soft tyre they couldn‘t even get close to our time, so that was a very good sign in the morning and we confirmed it in the afternoon. Let‘s see if we continue working this way and we‘ll concentrate on improving the bike even more.”
