Loi: “We made just the right decision”

Loi: “We made just the right decision”

A maiden Moto3™ World Championship victory for Loi after a chaotic Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.

For the second time in two weeks a Belgian has won a Grand Prix, Livio Loi (RW Racing GP) risked slicks on the grid to gain the upperhand. The Moto3™ race was declared wet on Sunday at the Indianapolis Grand Prix, but RW and Loi decided to risk slick tyres as the rain had stopped falling. This proved to be a masterstroke, the young Belgian, nicknamed ‘The Sniper’, was able to push on while the rest of the field pitted for slick tyres. Riders who entered the pits to change tyres lost upwards of 40 seconds.

On the third lap the 18 year old Belgian took the lead and pushed, never challenged from that point onwards. The was a slight scare for all the Moto3™ riders as rain begin to fall again at mid-race distance, but the track remained dry. Loi would take the chequered flag a staggering 38.860 seconds ahead of John McPhee (SAXOPRINT-RTG). At this stage last year Loi was without a ride as he had just been released from his contract with another team.

Livio Loi: “I’m over the moon. I still can’t believe I’ve won. We made just the right decision to go out on slicks and I was able to go for it from the start. It was just perfect. When I came to the group I had to pay extra attention to stay out of troubles and when it started to rain again I decided to back down a bit. Why take any risk of crashing when you have over half a minute of advantage? I could keep my head cool, stayed calm and concentrated and give myself and the team a well-deserved victory. Amazing!”
