Home Heroes: Check out the Czechs

Three riders will participate in their home Grand Prix this weekend at the bwin Grand Prix České republiky as they seek to match Pesek.

Karel Hanika (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Jakub Kornfeil (Drive M7 SIC Racing Team) will both compete in the Moto3™ World Championship with Karel Abraham (AB Motoracing) returning to action in the MotoGP™ class. Of the three Hanika has the best form heading into the Czech GP. From the last three races the KTM rider has been able to achieve two front row starts, a steady improvement from the opening rounds. During his time in the Red Bull Rookies Cup Hanika was able to claim two winws across the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Last year he finished 15th in the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic, his first year competing in the World Championship.

Lining up alongside him on the Moto3™ grid is Kornfeil, another former Red Bull Rookies Cup rider, who also claimed a win in Brno. The rider from Kyjov has shown flashes of speed in Moto3™ and the 125cc class but has failed to finish on the podium. His best finish at home in the Czech Republic came in 2010 when he was fifth. His 14th place in 2014 was his first, and so far only, time outside the top ten in Brno.

Karel Abraham returns after missing multiple rounds with a foot injury sustained at the Catalan GP. The Grand Prix of the Czech Republic has always been a difficult race for Abraham; in 2010 he was forced to miss it due to injury. Of the nine races at Brno Abraham has started he has only finished in four; with a best of ninth in 2012 MotoGP™ race. This ninth place is the best result by a Czech rider in the MotoGP™ class at Brno.

The combination of his still healing foot, up until recently it was held together with wires, and the Open Honda mean Abraham is in for a difficult home race. He, along with Hanika and Kornfeil, will be aiming to emulate Lukas Pesek who finished third in 2007 on a 125cc Derbi. Pesek is the only Czech rider to ever finish on the podium at the current Brno circuit.
