Lorenzo smashes lap record in FP3

Jorge Lorenzo sets the fastest ever lap around the Automotodrom Brno to top FP3 while Cal Crutchlow misses out.

Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo dominated proceedings at the Automotodrom Brno during FP3, setting the fastest ever lap around the track by a motorbike in the process, a 1’55.476. The Spaniard led home a Yamaha 1-2 as his teammate Valentino Rossi was in second, although he was 0.555s off Lorenzo’s pace. The big shock of the session was the pole man from 2013 at Brno, CWM LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow, missing out on automatic qualification through to Q2 while Yonny Hernandez and Hector Barbera made it through.

Conditions were a big improvement from the heat of Friday afternoon with cooler temperatures (36˚C Track Temp) meaning more grip, therefore it didn’t take long for lap times to start dropping. As usual, with five minutes to go there was the frantic shootout to decide who would make it through to Q2 as riders put in fresh rubber and set their flying laps.

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez (+0.568s) had led the way for most of the session but had to settle for third as the only Honda in the top five. Bradley Smith (+0.719s) on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 was the leading Satellite rider in fourth.

Ducati Team’s Andrea Iannone (+0.746s) preferred to stick with the older version of his GP15 available to him to set the fifth fastest time. Rookie Maverick Viñales (+0.795s) on the Team Suzuki Ecstar GSX-RR was in sixth.

Octo Pramac Racing’s Yonny Hernandez (+0.875s) was seventh ahead of the Avintia Racing Ducati of Hector Barbera who was the leading Open class rider in eighth, just 0.924s behind the pace of Lorenzo.

Andrea Dovizioso preferred the newer version of his Ducati GP15 to set his flying lap and was ninth overall, just ahead of Dani Pedrosa on the second Repsol RC213V Honda. The Spaniard making it through to Q2 despite the ankle injury he picked up yesterday in FP2.

Big names missing out on making it through directly to Q2 include Pol Espargaro (11th), Aleix Espargaro (12th), Cal Crutchlow (13th), and Scott Redding (14th).

Irishman Eugene Laverty (Aspar MotoGP Team) was the leading Open class Honda in 18th, while Jack Miller crashed out of the session at turn 3 and had to settle for 20th.
