Rins: “Happy to be on the podium”

Rins opts for the hard tyres and puts on a late charge for third at the bwin Grand Prix České republiky.

While the majority of riders in the Moto2™ World Championship opted for the medium front and medium rear combination, Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40) opted for a hard rear. Throughout the weekend the impressive Moto2™ rookie had found there was too much sliding when using the medium rear, a poor option for the race he felt. Rins would eventually finish the race in third place, just 0.3s off Tito Rabat (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Racing) in second and didn’t feel the tyre was a deciding factor.

The last five laps saw Rins set three laps in the high 2’02s to close down Rabat, who only set two laps in the high 2’02s. Rins gained and pushed hard down to the final corner, unable to catch Rabat on corner exit. This third place has Rins drop down to third in the Moto2™ World Championship table, but he is just one point shy of former Moto2™ World Champion Tito Rabat. 2014 saw Maverick Viñales finish third in the Moto2™ Championship in his rookie season, Rins is aiming to go one better and end his rookie campaign in second overall.

Alex Rins: “I don’t think tyres were an issue, during all the weekend I tried the soft one and whenever I opened the gas it started to slide. Anyway I think I had a fantastic race and in the final corner I pushed really hard to catch Tito. Finally I finished third and I’m happy for that. Happy to be on the podium and hopefully we continue like this.”
