Kent: “We asked for a new soft tyre, but didn’t get it”

Tricky conditions once again left Kent off the podium as he battled to seventh in the bwin Grand Prix České republiky.

For the third time this season Danny Kent (Leopard Racing) was unable to finish on the Moto3™ World Championship podium. A multiple rider crash at Turn 3 brought out the red flag on lap one, forcing the race to be restarted. Many other riders on the grid put in new tyres but Kent was forced to remain on the same used tyres, as there were no new softs available. This resulted in the Brit struggling under acceleration.

The last two races have seen Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Team Moto3) gain 21 points on Kent in the Championship, yet the Brit still protects a 45-point lead. With a race with awarding 25 points this is still a comfortable margin, but Kent is eager to return to the podium in upcoming races. Round 12, the British Grand Prix, will be an important round for Kent, not just due to its significance in the Championship but also as it’s the Brits home round. Riders not only dream of winning championships, but also of taking victories in front of stands filled with roaring home crowds and both now look a possibility for Kent.

Danny Kent: “Of course we’re here to try to extend our championship lead every time and we lost now 21 points over Bastianini in the last two races. The main problem was the re-start today where we asked for a new soft tyre, but didn’t get. So we were forced to put in a used medium rear because of the reduced distance with just twelfth laps. Though, the soft tyre is half a second quicker than the medium compound, of course a new one. So we went into the re-started race with a used medium race and we were losing too much in acceleration."

“Brno in particularly is a track, which offers a lot of acceleration, mainly the last section coming up the hill. However, I was on the limit all race long, but there were too many places where I got passed as well as I had some big moments due to the sliding rear. Anyway, we got some points, we finished in seventh place and we still have a 45 points lead in the championship. But honestly I’m quite frustrated. So now I look forward to do even better at my home race in Silverstone next time.”
