Smith: “We still don’t know exactly what happened”

A crash in FP3 at the Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon has Bradley Smith and his team puzzled in regards the cause.

The Aragon GP was, until his fall in FP3, a near faultless weekend for Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith, the Brit ending Friday in third on combined times. Smith and his team are still unsure of exactly what caused the crash, though one reason could be cold tyres. The incident did not majorly impact Smith and his preparation for Q2 was not majorly altered. Unfortunately the British rider was unable to find the last 0.4s in Qualifying and ended the session in a somewhat disappointing tenth.

On the bright side, Smith was able to set high 1’47s with ease and over several laps which bodes well for his race pace. Morning Warm Up will provide Smith with a final chance to search for solutions and work out a plan for the race as despite starting in tenth, Smith is aiming for a top six finish. Defending fifth in the MotoGP™ World Championship is Smith’s primary aim for the remainder of the season.

Bradley Smith: “Although my grid position is a little further back from where I have been qualifying recently, the weekend has been going well and I am quite positive about getting into the top six tomorrow in the race. I felt comfortable as soon as we got running here, even though I had a little fall this morning. To be honest, we still don’t know exactly what happened, but one possible reason is that the tyres weren’t up to temperature yet. Anyway, in Q2 I expected to do a 47.8 or a 47.9 lap time and I was actually able to do this time for three laps consistently which bodes well for the race. However, today we were missing that last 0.4 of a second, which would have resulted in me scoring a strong qualifying position. We need to analyse a few more details tomorrow in the warm up and then finalise our plan for the race. We will then go from there and hopefully I will be able to get in the mix after a good start.”
