Rabat: “I am so happy to win here at home”

A second win of the season for Tito Rabat, holding off his rivals in a red flagged race at the Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon.

The Moto2™ World Championship race saw Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Racing’s Tito Rabat made a flying start before running wide several corners later. As the still reigning Moto2™ World Champion tried to fight his way back through the field, the red flag was brought out due to a crash involving Dominique Aegerter (Technomag Aegerter) and restarted as a 14 lap sprint. The race restart followed a similar pattern, though Rabat was able to complete the opening laps without any mistakes. As he attempted to break away, compatriot Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40) stuck with him.

Rins ghosted Rabat for almost the entire race, waiting for the final laps to gain the advantage. When the race was restarted Rins had fitted a new soft tyre, while Rabat was forced to use the same. As such Rabat knew Rins would be strong in the closing laps and did his best to defend at every opportunity, Rins got past occasionally but Rabat always struck back. Victory would be Rabat’s by just 0.096s as the Spanish duo dragged to the line. Meanwhile, championship leader Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) had a difficult race down in sixth and was unable to capitalise on his first title chance, Rabat keeping the crown for another round.

Tito Rabat: “On the last lap I knew that Rins was going to be fast at the end of the race because he had used a new soft tyre for the second start and we had to use the same tyre as the first start. I am so happy to win here at home so I want to say a big thank you to my team. We have still got four races to go until the end of the year, so I want to enjoy those races and, hopefully, add some more wins."
