Luthi leads the way in Moto2™ FP1

Luthi leads the way in Moto2™ FP1

Thomas Luthi was quickest out of the blocks in FP1 ahead of Johann Zarco and Sandro Cortese while Tito Rabat pulls out from injury.

Derendinger Racing Interwetten’s Swiss rider Luthi topped the timesheets with a 1’51.556 in near perfect conditions (Track Temp. 40˚C) at the Twin Ring Motegi. The big story however, was that EG 0,0 Marc VDS’s Tito Rabat was forced to pull out of the session and will play no further part in the weekend due to the injury to his left radius. This means leaves the door open for the man who came second in FP1, Ajo Motorsport’s Johann Zarco, to lift the Moto2™ World Championship this weekend. Zarco was the only rider to get within half a second of Luthi, as he finished just 0.012s further back.

Dynavolt Intact GP’s Sandro Cortese (+0.523s) completed the provisional front row ahead of Speed Up Racing’s Sam Lowes (+0.525s) in fourth. AGR Team’s Jonas Folger (+0.634s) was fifth ahead of the Paginas Amarillas HP40 duo of Luis Salom and Axel Pons in seventh and eighth respectively, despite the latter crashing out at turn 10 late on in the session.

Simone Corsi (Forward Racing) and Hafizh Syahrin (Petronas Raceline Malaysia) completed the top ten while there were also crashes for Julian Simon (QMMF Racing Team), Josh Hook (Technomag Racing Interwetten) and Xavier Simeon (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2).

Check out the full Moto2™ FP1 results; FP2 kicks off at 15:05 local time in Motegi.
