Oliveira: “I knew that we could be up at the front”

Oliveira: “I knew that we could be up at the front”

Second in the Motul Grand Prix of Japan marks a third consecutive podium for Miguel Oliveira.

A two-hour delay started proceedings on Sunday at the Japanese GP, heavy fog and rain made racing activities unsafe and as such Race Direction took the decision to delay action. In the end the Moto3™ World Championship race was reduced to 13 laps and the riders given only ten minutes in Warm Up to learn the wet conditions. Miguel Oliveira’s situation was further complicated by three place grid penalty due to irresponsible riding during QP, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider lining up in fifth instead of second.

The wet race was thrilling, Oliveira putting in a late charge to try and catch Niccolo Antonelli (Ongetta-Rivacold) who had broken away and opened a significant gap. Try as he might, the Portuguese rider was unable to pass the Italian and ended the race 1.053s behind. With second place, Oliveira closes the gap on the championship lead and continues his run of three podium finishes. Danny Kent (Leopard Racing) sits atop the championship table with 244 points, 65 ahead of Oliveira. With three races remaining there are still 75 points to fight for, the 2015 crown is still achievable.

Miguel Oliveira: “The race went pretty well. From the morning in the warm up, in which we rode for 10 minutes, I had a good feeling with the bike in the wet. It was very stable and I liked how I was riding; I felt very comfortable and that I had the chance to do well in the race. Starting from fifth, I knew that we could be up at the front and I tried to ride a smart race, without mistakes. Finishing a second behind Antonelli was the best we could do. It’s a third consecutive podium and I further points, so I must follow this up in Australia. Thanks to the team."
