Lorenzo: “I was a little bit angry”

Jorge Lorenzo sets an identical time to Iannone in second, but will start the Pramac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix from third.

Sunday will see Jorge Lorenzo line up in third on the MotoGP™ grid despite setting an identical time to Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) who starts second. The Movistar Yamaha rider was followed by Iannone on his fastest lap, the pair setting identical 1’28.680 times, but Iannone was granted second on virtue of having the second fastest time. This did not please Lorenzo who felt that second on the grid would have been extremely beneficial.

A strong launch off the line will be critical as Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda), who starts in pole, has shown great pace throughout the course of the weekend. Iannone himself will also be a rider he has to be careful of, the Italian frequently having made solid starts. Lorenzo is more than capable of breaking away at the start of a race, but being shuffled back behind Iannone and Marquez may give Valentino Rossi, who starts seventh, a chance to catch up. 18 points split the Movistar Yamaha pair, a strong result at Phillip Island could shift the scales in favour of Lorenzo once more.

Jorge Lorenzo: “I was a little bit angry after qualifying, because my real position was second place if I could have been on track alone, but with my tow Iannone was very fast here and the Ducati‘s soft tyre for sure helped him to improve two or three tenths of a second and take second from me. This is very important because usually I start better than Marquez, but my starts are the same or maybe even a bit worse than Iannone‘s so this will make the first lap more difficult. We will have to be patient and know that the race is very long. Little by little I will work my way to the front and fight with Marquez for victory, that‘s my goal. I‘m happy with my last three fast laps, but not so much with the position, but it‘s not so bad in the bigger perspective, because Vale is on the third row.”
