Rins: “I was a little bit nervous”

Alex Rins overcomes nervous opening laps to dominate the Pramac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and take his second win of 2015.

There is little doubt that Alex Rins has been one of the stand out performers of the 2015 Moto2™ World Championship. In his rookie season he has been able to consistently battle for at least the top five and at one stage looked to be a title contender. Fast rookies are not new to the Paginas Amarillas HP 40 team, the Sito Pons run squad helped nurture Maverick Viñales in 2014. For the second time in 2015, Rins takes to the top step of the podium after dominating the Australian GP weekend. Throughout the weekend he looked almost untouchable and even the 2015 Moto2™ World Champion, Johann Zarco, was unable to catch the Spaniard.

It wasn’t an easy race for Rins, he felt nervous during the opening laps and struggled to settle into a rhythm. Eventually he found his confidence and began to push, breaking away from Sam Lowes (Speed Up Racing) to build a comfortable lead. Racing alone may look easy, but it can often be difficult for a rider’s mind to stay focused on the task at hand and mistakes can occur with just a slight lapse in concentration. But Rins rode like a veteran of the class, taking victory by 6.6 seconds and moving to second in the Moto2™ World Championship due to the absence of Tito Rabat (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS).

Alex Rins: "It doesn’t look it, but it’s difficult to stay focused for a whole race when you’re at the front. Knowing where to brake well is hard. In the beginning I was a little bit nervous, I made a mistake on the first lap and then in the second one I went a bit wide. Later I was able to focus my mind to push and improve my pace. Finally I got the victory. I’m very happy as all weekend we’ve been working well and now we look to the next race."
