Marquez: “I overheated the front tyre”

Marquez: “I overheated the front tyre”

Marc Marquez secured his 50th GP win and his first MotoGP™ victory at the Phillip Island circuit in the race of the year.

Back to his best, Marc Marquez made a strong start from pole position at the Pramac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and was immediately fighting with Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) and Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha). Lorenzo managed to force his way past and began to open up a gap while Iannone and Marquez relived their Moto2™ days. As Lorenzo escaped, Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha) closed in and Marquez quickly found himself battling with both Italians. Turns 4 and 10 were the favourite overtaking spots of Marquez and despite their frantic battle they gained on Lorenzo. The trio closed Lorenzo down and the Australian GP soon became a four rider affair.

Having pushed hard initially, Marquez was forced to slow down for a handful of laps as he had overheated his front tyre and was having multiple moments. It all came down to the last lap; Marquez dug deep and produced the best final lap of his racing career. The final lap began with Marquez 0.662s behind Lorenzo but an incredible 1’29.280 lap saw the younger of the two Spaniards come out on top, and set a new circuit record in the process. Not only is this Marquez’s first win in the premier class at Phillip Island, but also his 50th victory in the World Championship. With two races left in the 2015 season Marquez could still play a crucial role in deciding who lifts the 2015 crown.

Marc Marquez: “You know during the race I feel really strong but there were many passes between me, Valentino and Andrea and Jorge opened a gap. Then I pushed a little to catch Jorge but I overheated the front tyre and I had a lot of movement when I tried to open a gap. I tried to slow down to cool it down but it wasn’t there. The last three laps I said ‘OK I will push’. Andrea and Valentino overtook me and then the last lap I pushed 100%. I didn’t expect to arrive to Jorge but really happy for the win. I don't know where I pulled that time out from, but it was what made the difference for us! I want to thank all the team, Honda and all the fans. After a difficult season it’s always nice to finish the year with some victories! We worked really hard and the results weren’t coming but this result is really nice for us.”
