Viñales: “I could feel that I am very competitive”

The Pramac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix saw Maverick Viñales produce one of his best races in 2015.

Lining up in in sixth on the grid, Maverick Viñales made one of his best starts of the 2015 season and was involved in a titanic seven-rider battle in the opening laps. The MotoGP™ World Championship rookie impressed many as battled with the likes of Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) as the leading four stretched their advantage. On the third lap of the race the Team Suzuki Ecstar rider set his personal fastest lap, which would be the fourth fastest lap of the race overall, an impressive achievement. A consistent pace in the high 1’29s and low 1’30s would eventually bring Viñales home in sixth.

Sixth place is his best result of the 2015 season so far and cements his position as Rookie of the Year. The strong showing also boosted Viñales’ confidence greatly, the Spaniard feeling as though he could finally fully understand his bike and battle with the best riders in the world. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Australian GP for the Suzuki rider was that he finished just 6.8 seconds behind race winner Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda). The championship now head to Sepang for the final round of the back-to-back flyaways.

Maverick Viñales: “Today I enjoyed it a lot: it’s one of the races where I had the most fun. It is the first track where I could feel that I am very competitive and the first where I felt the bike is really close to the top. We still lack something with the power but we could compensate with excellent performance from the chassis, meaning we were very competitive in many sectors. We did a really good job on the set-up, also myself I feel more calm and focused. We made a good step up in improvement after Aragon and another after Japan, which makes me feel confident. Finally I ended 6.8s from the winner, so this makes me very happy.”
