Smith: “Today was quite a struggle”

Bradley Smith left with work to do as he ends the opening day of practice at the Shell Advance Motorcycle Grand Prix in 14th.

It was an unfortunately difficult start to the Malaysian GP for Bradley Smith as he explored the setup of his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 M1. The morning started roughly for Smith who did not have his usual confidence nor feeling, this came as a surprise to Smith and his team as they had had a very positive test in Sepang. Try as he might, the Brit was unable to escape the 2’02s bracket and although he’s only 0.251s behind teammate Pol Espargaro, Smith is in no way pleased by his performance.

Fortunately Smith is confident he can improve his performance on Saturday and Sunday as there are a variety of issues with the bike, in theory offering a variety of solutions to the problems. This is an unfortunate dip in what has otherwise been an incredible season for the satellite rider and he’ll be doing all he can to return to the front of the MotoGP™ grid for Sunday’s race.

Bradley Smith: “It’s good to be back at Sepang which is a track that I enjoy riding at, but I must admit that today was quite a struggle and to be completely honest, we have some work to do. As soon as I started this morning, my confidence and feeling wasn’t quite the same as usual with the bike and it’s difficult to understand why after the positive test that we had here in February. At the moment, we are unfortunately stuck inside the 2’02 bracket, which of course, is not where we want or need to be. However, a positive is that we are not just struggling with one specific factor but we need to improve the bike as a whole which means it is easier to find some solutions. Anyway, towards the end of the second free practice session, we were able to improve slightly, yet there is plenty of work to do tomorrow still. Overall, we tried a lot of different settings today in order to identify which direction to head towards and now we will have an in depth look at the data and then see what we can do. It was a tricky start today, but for sure, tomorrow we will be stronger.”
