Zarco: “This latest win is fantastic:

Win number eight for Johann Zarco after a late charge in the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Track conditions were hotter than ever as the Moto2™ World Championship lined up on the grid, Johann Zarco remained confident despite the rise in temperature as he and his Ajo Motorsport had worked hard during the weekend and prepared well. The Frenchman made a good start and immediately started challenging Tom Luthi (Derendinger Racing Interwetten) in the opening corners but the Swiss rider had the better early pace, Zarco settling in behind him. Quickly the two broke away from the rest of the field, Zarco content to sit in Luthi’s slipstream, as he knew their pace would see them safe to finish in the top two. A few mistakes during the middle of the race saw Zarco drop back, opening a gap of around half a second.

In the final laps Zarco struck, able to rapidly close down the gap and was right behind Luthi on the final lap, Zarco passing Luthi to secure his eighth victory of the season. Even in the testing conditions of Sepang, Zarco still had enough energy for his customary end of race backflip. It was a fantastic victory from Zarco, ending the eventful flyaway period on a high after the disappointment of Phillip Island. Zarco and the rest of the Moto2™ field finally get a week off to recover and regroup before the final battle of 2015 in Valencia.

Johann Zarco: “From the beginning I felt good, but Luthi was even better than I was. What I did was try to follow him as best I could; things were a little different than I thought, so I tried to stay calm and not even look back because I had a very good pace. I figured that if I stuck to him it would be the two of us fighting for first and second place and that was how it ended up being. From the middle of the race I saw that he was faster than me; I made a few mistakes and I tried to keep calm on the bike. At the end I was able to catch him and on the last lap I tried to overtake him to finally cross the line first. This latest win is fantastic, and I am very happy. It has been a very long three weeks and it’s been hard mentally and physically. I’ve won this race and now I can rest for a week before Valencia."
