Lowes sets the pace in Moto2™ FP1

Sam Lowes went quickest in Friday morning’s Free Practice 1 ahead of Thomas Luthi and Alex Rins.

Speed Up Racing’s Sam Lowes set the early pace in Moto2™ FP1 at the Comunitat Valenciana – Ricardo Tormo circuit with a 1’35.761. The Brit rider made use of the warm and sunny conditions (Track temp. 25˚C) to get within eight-tenths of a second of Pol Espargaro’s Pole Record from 2013 (1’34.957).

Derendinger Racing Interwetten’s Thomas Luthi (+0.203s) was second fastest, just 0.030s ahead of Alex Rins (+0.233s) on the Paginas Amarillas HP40 Kalex in third.

AGR Team’s Jonas Folger (+0.313s) ended up fourth fastest in a session that saw less than a second separate the top 14 riders. EG 0,0 Marc VDS’s Tito Rabat (+0.422s) made his comeback from the broken radius in his left arm - which forced him to pull out of the Japanese GP – in an impressive fifth.

Paginas Amarillas HP40’s Luis Salom (+0.455s) was sixth fastest, with Julian Simon (QMMF Racing Team) in seventh ahead of the Forward Racing duo of Simone Corsi and Lorenzo Baldassari in eighth and ninth respectively.

Franco Morbidelli (Italtrans Racing Team) completed the top ten, with the 2015 Moto2™ World Champion Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) in 11th.

Takaaki Nakagami (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) crashed late on in the session and had to settle for 12th, while wildcard Federico Fuligni (Ciatti) had a bike-destroying crash after the checkered flag had been shown and finished down in 32nd.
