Kornfeil: “I thought I had lost the race”

Kornfeil: “I thought I had lost the race”

A dramatic last corner incident promotes Jakub Kornfeil to third in the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana.

From 12th on the grid Jakub Kornfeil made a strong start to the race to end the first lap inside the top ten. The Drive M7 SIC rider then spent the majority of the race just outside the front group, battling around sixth and seventh. Kornfeil thought that this is where his race would end and focused on trying to catch long-term rival Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo). In typical Moto3™ style, the battle at the front went to the line and drama shook the final result.

An overly ambitious move from Niccolo Antonelli (Ongetta-Rivacold) saw the Italian saw the Italian crash and take down two other riders with him. This misfortune would boost Kornfeil into third, the Czech rider securing his second podium of the season. Although it came as a surprise it was a welcome one for Kornfeil and the Drive M7 SIC team who have had a difficult year in 2015 full of ups and downs. Kornfeil ends the 2015 season 12th overall and focuses his attention on 2016. For 2016 he will remain with the Drive M7 SIC team but on Honda machinery.

Jakub Kornfeil: “No definitely not expecting that. I was hoping something like that would happen during the race but not in the last corner did I think I could get the podium. I thought I had lost the race because I couldn’t’ stay behind Antonelli because he was so fast and the pace so high. I just wanted to pass Binder in the last lap and this is just the little extra! I had a lot of luck today so thank you to everyone.”
