Maverick Viñales Interview: “I learnt a lot”

Maverick Viñales Interview: “I learnt a lot”

Team Suzuki Ecstar’s MotoGP™ Rookie of the Year Maverick Viñales reflects on his debut season in the premier class.

Maverick, how does it feel to become Rookie of the Year in MotoGP™ - and Rookie of the Year for the second year in succession after 2014 in Moto2™?
“It feels good. It was in our plan. We are happy but not ‘maximum’ happy because we would have liked to be closer to the top. Anyway, we have been doing a really good job this season.”

It is now more or less exactly one year since you stepped up to MotoGP™ and that you took your first lap on the Suzuki. How have bike and rider developed since then?
“I learnt a lot. I learned how a MotoGP team works, the media schedule is a lot busier, also how to work really hard in the box. MotoGP isn’t just getting on the bike and doing your best. It’s much more.”

“The bike has improved a lot on the chassis, but on the engine it hasn’t improved so much, just a little bit. They are working really hard. In the chassis we made a really big improvement.”

Will you have a brand new bike for the test on Tuesday or will you stick to this year’s version?
“No, we will start with the same bike and we will be really focused on the Michelins. It doesn’t make sense now to try a new bike with new tyres, when you don’t know what works. Maybe the new bike is better but the tyres are worse – you don’t know really. We need to try our bike with the Michelins and then try the new bike.

We have heard you are also looking at taking part in the Suzuka 8 hours Endurance race?
“I would like to go. I have asked Suzuki to do it this year, but they said no because they are very busy with the MotoGP project. So it wasn’t possible. If we have the chance I will push to do it because it is one experience every rider needs to have.

How about a 24 hours race?
“24 hours no! For sure it’s too much!”
