Iannone: “I just focused more on dialing myself back in”

A best time of 2’01.912 awards Andrea Iannone with fifth overall having spent much of the day on the GP15.

With the winter break now over, MotoGP™ World Championship riders were reunited with their machines in Sepang as the build up to the 2016 season begins with a three-day test. Andrea Iannone and the Ducati Team spent the majority of the first day on the GP15, the Italian bringing himself back up to speed after two months away from the Desmosedici. With new electronics and tyres, using a bike he was familiar with allowed Iannone to better understand how to get the best out of new Michelins. Towards the end of the day ‘The Maniac’, who wore a helmet with a seagull motif in honour of the bird he hit during the Australian GP, did several laps on the GP16 before rain fel with 20 minutes remaining, halting proceedings. With two more days in Sepang he and Ducati remain confident of making progress.

Andrea Iannone: “I have to say that today went quite well, because I got back onto the bike after more than two months, and I was always close to the top guys all day. Today we didn’t change anything big or turn the bike upside-down, I just focused more on dialing myself back in and trying to understand how to get the best out of the Michelin tyres. That’s the way we have to continue: we’ve got two more days in which to make progress and understand the new Desmosedici GP in detail. Today we only did a few laps with the new bike, but for the moment we are satisfied.”
