Baz: “I feel that finishing sixth or seventh was possible”

Loris Baz was forced to use old tyres on the final day in Qatar, the Frenchman still able to set competitive times with imperfect rubber.

Pre-season testing for the 2015 MotoGP™ World Championship warpped up in Qatar with Loris Baz ending 14th on the combined times. The tall Frenchman was left disappointed with the result, feeling he could have been well inside the top ten had he just a few more new tyres to use. The final day saw Baz spend the majority of his time on used rubber, still able to lap in the mid to low 1’56s with ease. Unfortunately this led to the Avintia Racing rider falling as he continued to push harder and harder. This resulted in Baz and his Avintia Racing team deciding to end the test early.

During the final day Baz produced a best time of 1’56.057, 1.247s behind Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) who led the test. Even in 14th Baz was still ahead of the factory Suzuki of Aleix Espargaro (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and both the factory Aprilia riders. With three solid tests completed, Baz is now eager for the season to get underway on the 20th of March.

Loris Baz: “It was a frustrating day. As we had not enough tyres we used old tyres, but we found something that was working really well, my crew chief, Alessandro Togneli, wanted to test something and it really helped. I did 56.0 with a 30-laps front tyre and with the rear that we did not like, so I was quite happy. Then I put a new rear, but something was wrong and it was not possible to improve. I tried to push a little bit more and I crashed, and with no more tyres we decided to stop. It’s a pity because my potential was higher and I feel that finishing sixth or seventh was possible today. I’m really looking forward to start the serious stuff in just two weeks.”
