Lorenzo: “We need to keep our feet on the ground”

Reigning MotoGP™ World Champion Jorge Lorenzo heads into the 2016 season with arguably the best form of any rider.

All three pre-season tests were positive for Jorge Lorenzo, the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider setting the fastest time in Sepang and most importantly in Qatar. Not only did he assert his dominance over a single lap. Lorenzo also did a race simulation during the Qatar Test that was stronger than most of his rivals. The adaptation to the Magneti Marelli ECU and software and Michelin tyres has gone well for Lorenzo and for Yamaha. Despite the fine testing form and entering the season as World Champion, Lorenzo is staying calm as he knows anything can happen over a race weekend.

On seven occasions Lorenzo has finished on the podium for the MotoGP™ race at Qatar, taking victory in 2012 and 2013. Unfortunately this strong historic record didn’t help Lorenzo in 2014 or 2015 when he had huge issues at the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar, crashing and then encountering visor problems and proving that anything can happen. For the 2016 season Lorenzo has changed helmet supplier, the latter should therefore not be an issue. With a successful Qatar Test under his belt, Lorenzo can head into the race with some level of confidence as he and his crew will have a strong base setting to work from throughout the weekend.

Jorge Lorenzo: “The pre-season is over and the real action will kick off under the floodlights of Losail. All of us are eager to start the true competition. The winter was so long and testing has not the same feeling as racing. I feel very strong and arrive very confident to this first match of the season. I‘m happy I adapted quite well to the Michelin tyres and we proved it during two of three tests. However we need to keep our feet on the ground because until Sunday the points are not distributed so we have to work hard from Thursday on to get a good position and then demonstrate our strong pace in the race. I would like to start this 2016 season in the best way possible, especially compared to the beginning of 2015. Let‘s go into this race fighting and enjoy it!”
