Dovizioso: “We are up there with the quickest riders”

Dovizioso: “We are up there with the quickest riders”

A strong closing lap in FP3 from Andrea Dovizioso makes it two factory Ducatis inside the top five as Friday actions concludes.

Having steadily made small steps in the right direction, Andrea Dovizioso was able to deliver on his and the Desmosedici GP’s potential on Friday. Free Practice 2 saw Dovizioso up in fifth, 0.333s back on his Ducati Team teammate Andrea Iannone who topped the session. This laid the foundations for further improvements in FP3 where ‘Desmo Dovi’ improved his time by 0.8s and moved up to fourth. With Iannone again leading the way, the situation is looking positive for Ducati as the Italian factory appear to have adapted to the new Michelin tyres and Magneti Marelli electronics without issue.

Dovizioso’s 1’54.945 in FP3 came at the end of a seven lap run, almost all riders in the MotoGP™ World Championship feeling the new rubber takes several laps to reach ideal operating conditions. Figuring out exactly how the tyres behave at the start of their life will be crucial for the race on Sunday; an overly enthusiastic start could end in the gravel. But before the challenges of the race, Dovizioso will do battle for pole position in Q2. The Italian’s best Qualifying in Qatar came in 2015 when he was on pole thanks to a 1’54.113 lap.

Andrea Dovizioso: “I am very pleased with all the work we’ve done and with the progress we have made in our performance: we made small steps but all of them have been in the right direction. We arrived at the third free practice session with a fast pace and above all with a good feeling with the Desmosedici GP, and this has always been my priority. We have always set some good lap times and in my final run I could have improved even more if I hadn’t made a little mistake in Turn 15. I am in any case satisfied because we are up there with the quickest riders and we still have a margin to improve, and with this pace now we can focus on the fine-tuning for the race.”
