Espargaro: “I knew it was a gamble”

Espargaro: “I knew it was a gamble”

A difficult weekend under the Qatari floodlights culminated in an even more difficult race for Aleix Espargaro, ending down in 11th.

The change to Michelin tyres has not been an easy one for Aleix Espargaro, the Team Suzuki Ecstar rider had spent the majority of testing chasing improved front end feel with little to show for it. After the situation reached a critical point in ‘morning’ Warm Up, Espargaro’s crew made big changes to his Suzuki GSX-RR, betting big with little to lose. The alterations seemed to work as Espargaro felt more confident on the bike, able to battle from 15th on the grid to 11th. It was not the result he was aiming for and he was a considerable distance from his teammate, but after the rough start to the weekend it shows there is light at the end of the tunnel for the older Espargaro brother.

With a new direction to follow, Espargaro is hopeful of improving in the coming rounds and achieving his goal of finishing inside the top six. The dream remains to finish on the podium, Suzuki last stepping onto the podium at the Czech GP in 2008, with Espargaro’s last, and so far only, premier class podium coming at the Aragon GP in 2014. A number of upgrades, including a fully seamless gearbox that Espargaro used in the race, show that Suzuki are committed to making this dream a reality.

Aleix Espargaro: “This has been a very hard weekend and the race result reflects this. This afternoon in the warm-up I felt very uncomfortable, so with my team and the Suzuki Engineers we decided to make a huge change in the bike, and I knew it was a gamble, but for some reason it gave me more confidence. It has been an extreme trial to make me more confident, for sure we will now analyse the data we collected here and test again in Argentina – but the good thing is that after the race we found some interesting hints on how to exploit a direction and this will help us a lot.”
