Bautista: “It was not a walk in the park”

With a hard fought 13th place finish, Alvaro Bautista and Aprilia prove that the new RS-GP has more to come.

After only running the new Aprilia RS-GP in two brief tests, Aprilia Racing Team Gresini knew it would be an uphill battle at the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar. But Alvaro Bautista’s strong ride to 13th offered hope, with limited kilometers under his belt the Spaniard was able to battle with Jack Miller (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS) and Eugene Laverty (Aspar Team MotoGP), both on well developed bikes. 13th is already a massive improvement over Bautista’s performance in the 2015 race, where he failed to finish due to a technical issue caused by another rider.

Throughout the 2015 season Bautista and Aprilia together achieved a best result of tenth at the Catalan GP, promoted several positions by a number of falls. To achieve 13th in what all parties were treating as an extended test session is an incredibly positive result and demonstrates that the all new 2016 RS-GP is a major evolution of the 2015 version which was based on the ART bike. The future looks bright from Aprilia and they now eagerly await the second round of the season in Argentina.

Alvaro Bautista: “It was important to us to finish the race, but it was not a walk in the park. I managed to start well, but on the first corner there was contact with another rider. That made me run wide and I found myself in last place with a lot of ground to make up. From that moment I set my pace. In the first laps I had a strange feeling with the grip and that is something we will need to check. From mid-race I began to gain on the other riders until engaging in a great battle with Miller and Laverty. In any case, thirteenth place is a good result for us. I want to thank the team, Aprilia and the partners to this project. They all worked nonstop to get to this first race.”
