Bastianini: “We still need to work to improve”

Consistent lap times on both new and used tyres was both a blessing and curse for Enea Bastianini as he set the pace in Moto3™.

Leading the way in both Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2, Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Moto3) showed his championship intent once more. After an underwhelming weekend in Qatar, the young Italian was eager to bounce back and attack from the start of the weekend. A time of 1’51.137 saw ‘The Beast’ lead the opening day, 0.105s ahead of second place. Much of the day was spent working with tyres in an attempt to gauge what will work for the race.

Strong times came on both new and old tyres, proving that Bastianini is certainly consistent. But it also gave him and his Gresini Racing Moto3 team some work to do as they are lacking pace on new rubber. Taking full advantage of new tyres will be vital during Qualifying and in the opening laps of Sunday's race. Bastianini has never finished above ninth in Argentina but if his pace carries forward, he could very well find himself in podium contention.

Enea Bastianini: “It was a very positive first day because we have always been in the top positions in both free practice sessions. In the afternoon the track conditions improved and I felt more comfortable on the bike, although we still need to work to improve, especially with regard to the performance with new tyres. Today in fact we set more or less the same lap times with used and with new tyres: tomorrow will be important to be able to take full advantage of the new tyre if we want to remain on top, because in qualifying all riders will push 100%. However, I think that we can do very well also tomorrow.”
