Bastianini tops first Moto3™ practice in Argentina

Bastianini tops first Moto3™ practice in Argentina

Italy’s Enea Bastianini led Free Practice 1 at the Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina ahead of Loi and Brad Binder.

With the air temperature at 25°C and the track a warm 28°C, riders in the Moto3™ World Championship swarmed out of pit lane to get their first taste of the Termas de Rio Hondo in 2016. This was a crucial test for the rookies in the field, none having run at the track before and not having the benefit of having a three day test prior to the event. All the time clouds loomed ominously overhead.

As ever, much of the session was spent cleaning the track of dirt and bedding it in. The fine layer of dust on the track caused a lot of spinning with the Dunlop tyres, reducing grip, this meant the session was focused mainly on track familiarisation. Showing his experience in the class and at the track, Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Moto3) set a 1’52.467 to lead the session.

Showing impressive pace again in second was Livio Loi (RW Racing GP BV), the young Belgian 0.375s back on the Italian. A mistake at Turn 1 in Qatar cost him the chance to battle for the podium.

Third in the session was another Qatar protagonist: Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo), the South African continuing his fine form. As one of the most experienced riders in the class, many are expecting big things from him in 2016 and so far he has not disappointed.

Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) set a 1’53.792 to end 0.792s back on Bastianini and fourth in the session. Andrea Locatelli (Leopard Racing) completed the top ten and was the only other rider within a second of Bastianini’s time. However, with track conditions still improving, all times were over three seconds slower than the best laps of 2015.

Aron Canet (Estrella Galicia 0,0), Maria Herrera (MH6 Laglisse), Romano Fenati (Sky Racing Team VR46), Bo Bendsneyder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Fabio Quartararo (Leopard Racing) completed the top ten. Qatar GP race winner Niccolo Antonelli (Ongetta-Rivacold) was 11th.
