Barbera: “I started to believe more in myself”

Barbera: “I started to believe more in myself”

A small mistake saw Hector Barbera miss out on fourth place, the Spaniard recovering to take fifth and his best MotoGP™ result.

Throughout the Argentina GP weekend Hector Barbera had battled a severe flu, but the Spaniard was confident of a strong result come race day if it remained dry. Unfortunately for Barbera, the track was littered with damp patches as the 2016 MotoGP™ race in Argentina got underway. The situation was complicated further by a mandatory bike change. Barbera suffered initially in the early stages, the Spaniard uncertain in the mixed conditions. As the laps counted down, his confidence grew and he soon found himself battling alongside Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3).

The final eight laps of the race saw them hunt each other, Barbera attempting several aggressive moves to push past the Yamaha rider. A small mistake allowed Eugene Laverty (Aspar MotoGP Team) to slip past them both, Barbera rallying to take fifth. Although he was disappointed to miss out on fourth, the Spaniard was delighted to achieve his best ever finish in the premier class. Avintia Racing and Barbera have made huge strides forward since the introduction of the spec ECU and software package. With 18 championship points, Barbera sits seventh overall.

Hector Barbera: “I am very happy because overall the weekend was very strange, but in the end our work paid off. This morning in Warm Up I felt great and then the race was held in the worst conditions for me. When in this half dry, half wet track I get very tense and I knew it would be a very difficult race. My technician, Jarno, told me to try, holding back didn’t make sense, I listened to them and today I saw I could do well. I started to believe more in myself and to be more comfortable fighting with my teammate Loris and then with Pol. On the last lap he and I swapped positions several times and we ran wide, which allowed Laverty to take my fourth position. But after all the weekend this fifth is a great reward.”
