Oettl: “I want to finish in the top ten”

Oettl: “I want to finish in the top ten”

For the first time in his career, Philipp Oettl will line up on pole position after the German made the most of a dry track.

Philipp Oettl’s father, Peter Oettl, achieved 13 front row starts during his career but never managed a pole. Now in 2016, 19 years after his last race, his son has achieved that elusive feat. Moto3™ Qualifying was plagued with bouts of rain, meaning there was rarely ever any perfectly dry time on track. But Oettl was able to make the most of the short dry spells and set a 2’18.398 early in the session to claim his first ever pole position by over half a second. The German has always gone well in mixed conditions, taking his first, and so far only podium in the tricky Indianapolis GP in 2015. His lap was no fluke as the Schedl GP Racing rider can frequently be seen inside the top ten of practice sessions. This is the first pole for a German rider in the Moto3™ class since Jonas Folger at the San Marino Grand Prix in 2013.

Philipp Oettl: “Yeah it was really tricky for me. I was lucky that we stayed out and made some laps and that was the key, to just go faster and faster every lap. I’m happy for the team as they worked well and I think we’re ready for the race. Yeah, normally I stay out a long time in the sessions and I just did the same today and this was my strategy for the day. I want to finish in the top ten and get good points. It will be hard to fight in the dry with the fast guys, but I’m positive and step by step we’ll improve.”
