Lowes: “Our goal is to get back on the podium”

Lowes: “Our goal is to get back on the podium”

Another private test has Sam Lowes confident of a strong return in Mugello after a tricky weekend in France.

Throughout the start of the 2016 Moto2™ World Championship, Sam Lowes had been one of the most consistent riders, regularly finishing sessions inside the top five. This consistency never emerged in Le Mans, the Brit struggling for much of the weekend and unable to challenge for even a podium in the race. He would eventually finish in sixth and lose his championship lead, slipping to second, now five points behind Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40). Lowes has already been back out on track since Le Mans, running in a private test at Misano with several other teams. He had a small fall there but was unharmed. The Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 rider arrives not only with confidence from testing, but also from past performances in Mugello. In 2015 he took pole position, just his second in the class and went on to take fourth place. This pole position also gave him the circuit record, a 1’51.514. Before that he achieved his first ever Moto2™ front row start in Mugello when he was second on the 2014 grid.

Sam Lowes: “We had a difficult weekend at Le Mans, but we are not thinking about it anymore and we must look at the positives: we have been fast at Barcelona test after the Jerez race, and also two days ago at Misano, so we head to Mugello very confident. It’s a track that I love: last year I started from pole position and I got the fourth place despite a mistake early in the race which forced me to come back from behind, so I'm looking forward to racing! Our goal is to get back on the podium to keep the title challenge on!”
