Brothers, sisters and winners

After Marini’s Malaysian GP victory, we compare Rossi and his brother to some of the world's greatest brother and sister athletes

The world of sport has delivered some brother and sister duos who have taken their respective competitions by storm. At the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix, two more joined the illustrious group of siblings to create history, with Valentino Rossi’s (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) brother Luca Marini (SKY Racing Team VR46) claiming his maiden Grand Prix victory in the Moto2™ race – adding to Rossi’s illustrious trophy cabinet.

The two Italians aren’t the first to achieve this sort of feat in the world of motorcycles though. The Marquez brothers have eight World Championship titles and 77 victories between them in Grand Prix racing, with the Espargaro and Lowes brothers also having great success in the MotoGP™ and WorldSBK paddocks.

On four wheels, Michael and Ralf Schumacher both achieved victories in their respective Formula 1 careers, with Michael claiming seven world titles and 91 victories – two records that still see the German as the most successful driver of all time.

In tennis, Serena and Venus Williams are two of the most successful women’s players in recent history. The pair have won 14 Grand Slam Women's doubles titles and are unbeaten in Grand Slam doubles finals. Together, they’ve won three Olympic Gold medals and between them they have claimed 30 grand slam singles titles.

Staying on the court, but this time switching to Basketball, Pau and Marc Gasol have a fantastic record. Between them they have picked up nine NBA All-Star accolades and five Olympic medals, just to name two of their successes.

In Triathlon, the Brownlee duo are the first brothers to ever finish first and second in an individual event at the Olympic Games – just one of the stats that have seen the Yorkshiremen become global sporting stars.
