Schrötter on song to head Marquez in FP3

German rider over two tenths clear of the field on Saturday morning as fastest overall Binder crashes

After a wet Moto3™ FP3, the Australian weather cleared for Moto2™ FP3 at the Michelin® Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix as the intermediate class got a full dry session under their belts ahead of qualifying, with Marcel Schrötter (Dynavolt Intact GP) topping the timesheets after setting a 1:34.143.

Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) was second quickest on Saturday morning, the Spaniard 0.232 off Schrötter’s benchmark, with title contender Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) third on the FP3 timesheets – 0.501 off the top. Augusto Fernandez (Pons HP40) completes Moto2™’s final practice session in fourth, recovering from a crash on Friday, with Dominique Aegerter (Kiefer Racing) rounding out the top five on board his KTM chassis.

Championship leader Francesco Bagnaia (SKY Racing Team VR46) ended the session down in P18, however, the Italian sits fifth fastest on the combined times heading into qualifying. None of the top 14 riders improved on their fastest Friday times on Saturday, which leaves Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) sitting top of the pile. The South African though crashed at Turn 8, with his KTM machine barrel rolling into the air. This put him out for the rest of the session but he will be fit to ride in qualifying.

Nikki Tuuli (Petronas Sprinta Racing) also crashed, the Finn was taken to hospital for further examinations after a medical centre checkup.

Moto2™ qualifying begins at 14:30 local time (GMT +11).
