It was a tentative start to proceedings with the track still partially damp, but the intermediate class were soon able to head out on slick tyres to start setting representative lap times around the Sepang International Circuit. By the end of the session, Luca Marini (SKY Racing Team VR46) was fourth fastest, 0.315 off Marquez’ best, with Iker Lecuona (Swiss Innovative Investors) fifth – 0.373 back. Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) – the only man who can stop Bagnaia winning the Championship – ended FP1 in P11.
