On this week’s MotoGP™ Podcast, the full debrief from THAT Spielberg thriller! Regular analyst and former premier class star John Hopkins is back going through the key stories of the weekend - number one being the Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) vs Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) dog fight.
“I would say it was one of Dovi’s best career race wins, if not the best GP of this season,” comments Hopkins. “I was out of my seat screaming at the TV. A heart in mouth moment at the end there but Dovi calculated the race perfect. He got into Marc’s head early on, obviously they both made a little bit of a mistake at the beginning but Dovi calculated it perfect and he was not willing to let Marquez get away.
“Throughout the entire race, he obviously had a great view of him, saw where Marquez was strong and also weak and obviously it all came down to that last lap, last corner pass. We’ve seen a few of those in the past, with Dovi winning out more often than not! But it was like the tables had turned, it was looking like Marquez passing Dovi - he took a massive risk, but he just calculated it perfectly. The pass, the way he came in and got on the brakes and got the thing turned before Marquez could shoot straight up on the inside. It was the perfect pass!”
Moreover, Hopkins draws on his own experience to speak about the Yamahas and Suzukis racing up against vastly quicker motorcycles in terms of top speed. Another regular addition to the MotoGP™ Podcast is Simon Crafar, and you’ll get to hear more ‘Simon’s Scoops’. This week, the 500cc race winner gives us a clue as to when Yamaha can expect to have some more top speed and also the situation with KTM & Moto2™.
And finally, Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) is the Up & Coming interview, following his magnificent pitlane to P5 performance at the Czech GP. The Italian talks about the ups and downs of racing and perhaps the strangest way you’ve ever heard of a rider joining Valentino Rossi’s VR46 Academy.
