For the first time since 2015, the total number of crashes across the MotoGP™, Moto2™ and Moto3™ classes didn’t rise above the 1000 mark. In 2019, there were 971 crashes in the 19 rounds, compared to 1077 last season.
In the premier class, the full-time rider with the least amount of crashes across the entire season was Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) with four, his lowest tally since 2014. Yamaha duo Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) racked up just six each in 2019. At the other end of the spectrum, the rider with the greatest number of crashes was Johann Zarco with 17, eight more than he recorded in 2018. Pramac Racing’s Jack Miller has the second most with 15, closely followed by teammate Francesco Bagnaia and World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) on 14 apiece. This was Marquez’ least number of crashes in a single season since 2015.
With 20 crashes, Sam Lowes registered the most number of crashes in the Moto2™ class on board his Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 bike, with rookie Marco Bezzecchi having the next most with 18. World Champion Alex Marquez had his best season is terms of crashes, 12 is his lowest in the intermediate class, with second in the Championship and fellow MotoGP™ rider Brad Binder going down the road just four times.
In the lightweight class, Tom Booth-Amos topped the crash charts with 22 during 2019, with Can Öncü just one behind on 21. World Champion Lorenzo Dalla Porta saw the gravel trap 15 times, with teammate Marcos Ramirez crashing just six times – the lowest of all the full-time riders along with Jakub Kornfeil and Romano Fenati.
In terms of the circuit that saw the most crashes in 2019, Le Mans topped the billing with 90, 17 more than the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and Phillip Island. The least crash-fest circuit this season? MotorLand Aragon – just 15 crashes across the three days.
