LCR Honda Castrol's Alex Marquez was the fastest man in Q1 at the Michelin Grand Prix of Styria to move into the fight for pole position with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Miguel Oliveira. The Portuguese rider benefitting from a late lap cancellation for rookie Enea Bastianini (SKY VR46 Avintia), who had taken top spot with only a handful of seconds remaining.

In the end, the Italian was forced to settle for tenth in Q1. Team Suzuki Ecstar's Alex Rins will be annoyed to miss out on a spot in Q2 by only 0.033 of a second; the Spaniard will line-up on the fifth row of the grid alongside Dani Pedrosa (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Pol Espargaro (Repsol Honda Team).
