Migno takes P1 in double red-flagged session

The Italian finishes Free Practice quickest as big crashes from Deniz Öncü and Alberto Surra saw them require medical attention

In an action-packed Moto3™ FP3 session at Misano, Andrea Migno (Rivacold Snipers Team) came out on top of a late scramble for the line to knock Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) off P1 thanks to a 1:41.680. Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) completes the top three from a double red-flagged session at the Octo Grand Prix of San Marino.

An incident full Saturday morning

An unfortunate highside saw Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Tech3) go down at Turn 16 in the early stages of the morning session, with the Turkish rider requiring medical assistance on track before being taken to hospital for further treatment. Towards the end of the session, an incident between Alberto Surra (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Yuki Kunii (Honda Team Asia) saw the Italian go down at Turn 11 and he too required some track-side assistance before being taken away in an ambulance. Thankfully the riders were conscious as they left the track and we wish them a speedy recovery.

There were a number of other crashes despite the dry conditions, with Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) going down in a fast Turn 15 crash, while there was another big highside for Adrian Fernandez (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team). Andi Izdihar (Honda Team Asia) went down at Turn 8 too. With less than five minutes to go, both Petronas Sprinta Racing riders went down, Darryn Binder first at Turn 5 before John McPhee joined his teammate in the gravel moments later. It looked to have ended their hopes of securing a Q2 place, but the second red flag offered them a reprieve as they made their way back to their garages.

A final rush for the Q2 places

Pitlane eventually reopened for the final two minutes of the session, and it saw a frantic rush for the line with riders scrambling to get their names into the top 14 places. A number of riders were already comfortably safe at the top of the timesheets, but it didn’t stop them going out as Migno posted the weekend’s fastest lap. Further back, Binder made sure he joined the likes of Niccolo Antonelli (Avintia VR46 Academy), Jaume Masia (Red Bull KTM Ajo), Romano Fenati (SterilGarda Max Racing Team) and Sergio Garcia (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) inside the top eight.

Rookies Izan Guevara (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) and Xavier Artigas (Leopard Racing Team) also secured their places in the top 10.

A stacked Q1 session

While there were a number of late improvers, some of the class’ heaveyweights will scrap it out in the dreaded Q1 session, with McPhee and Suzuki to be joined by Indonesian Gresini riders Jeremy Alcoba and Gabriel Rodrigo, with Filip Salac (Car Xpert Pruestel GP) and debutant Matteo Bertelle (Bardhal VR46 Academy) also ones to watch this afternoon.

The lightweight class will be back in action for qualifying at 12:35 local time. Make sure you tune in then.
