Ogura steals the top spot from Roberts in Austin

The Japanese rider was ahead of home hero Roberts and Championship contender Lopez

At the end of the first Moto2™ session at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas, it was Ai Ogura (MT Helmets – MSI) who stole the top spot at the end of Free Practice after setting an astonishing 2:09.218 on the final lap of the session. The Japanese rider was ahead of home hero Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team), who pleased the American crowd, spending the final five minutes occupying first position before being pipped by Ogura. Beta Tools SpeedUp's Alonso Lopez placed the Triumph-powered machine in third, a further 0.080 behind Roberts - ending a consistent session.

Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo) had a rock-solid start to the weekend, setting 14 laps and finishing the session in fourth. The Italian was ahead of MT Helmets – MSI’s Sergio Garcia, who was another late-improving rider – rounding out the top five positions. It would be a subdued session for title favourite Fermin Aldeguer (Beta Tools SpeedUp), ending the session down in 17th (+1.188). Ayumu Sasaki would not leave the pitlane as the Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team rider would be declared unfit - as the Japanese rider continuing to recover from arm pump surgery.
