The top MotoGP™ fights: iconic rivalries, thrilling showdowns, and unforgettable moments

The 2024 Malaysian GP delivered a MotoGP™ classic as title rivals Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) went head-to-head in a breathtaking, no-holds-barred battle from the opening lap. With every corner contested, Bagnaia ultimately took the win, pushing the title fight to the final showdown. This unforgettable duel now stands among MotoGP™'s all-time greats.

2004: Rossi vs Biaggi, Welkom

In his debut race with Yamaha, Rossi took on Max Biaggi in a fierce duel, securing a memorable win that marked the beginning of a legendary season.

2005: Rossi vs Gibernau, Jerez

There is certainly no shortage of scraps between Gibernau and Rossi throughout the years; think Le Mans in 2003 or Australia in 2004, but we’ve plumped for their last lap Jerez clash on this list. The 2005 season opener was decided at the final corner after a stunning last lap battle, with ‘The Doctor’ taking glory and setting up his drive for five Championships in a row!

2008: Rossi vs Stoner, Laguna Seca

At Laguna Seca, Rossi pulled off an iconic overtake on Casey Stoner at the infamous Corkscrew, taking an impossibly tight inside line down the hill and seizing control of the race. This daring move cemented his victory and created one of the most unforgettable moments in MotoGP™ history.

2009: Rossi vs Lorenzo, Catalunya

Simply iconic. Teammates but fierce rivals duelling for glory and the title across the 2009 season, and in Barcelona VR46 invented some magic to win it on the last lap with one of the most celebrated overtakes in history.

2012: Lorenzo vs Pedrosa, Brno

Title rivals Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo engaged in a fierce showdown at Brno, pushing each other to the absolute limit. Pedrosa narrowly edged out Lorenzo to claim victory in this thrilling display of skill, but while Pedrosa won the battle, it was Lorenzo who ultimately won the war, capturing the 2012 MotoGP™ Championship.

2015: Pedrosa vs Rossi, Aragon

Not every great battle has to be for the win, as two MotoGP™ Legends proved in Aragon. Jorge Lorenzo had cleared off into the distance for victory at MotorLand, but second place was still up for grabs, and some crucial Championship points, as two of the greats put on an absolute show!

2015: Rossi vs Marquez, Sepang

A clash for the ages as the Rossi and Marquez rivalry hit an all time high. The Italian was in pursuit of another world title and was looking to battle his way past the #93, but then the infamous coming together came which saw Marquez crash out, Rossi take third but then slapped with a back of the grid penalty for the Valencia season finale, and his title hopes take a major hit. Before the controversy took over, the action was absolutely stunning.

2020: Morbidelli vs Miller, Valencia

The 2020 Valencia GP went down to the wire as the Italian and Australian went wheel-to-wheel in a classic last lap dust up. Morbidelli won the race by a hair’s breadth after a brilliant overtake, while Joan Mir was crowned World Champion.

2021: Bagnaia vs Marquez, Aragon

What a way to take your first ever MotoGP™ victory. As the race reached the end game, Marc Marquez attached himself to the rear tyre of the factory Ducati, and over the closing four laps, made several attempts for the lead. However, the Italian held firm to take the chequered flag first, and a maiden premier class victory.

2024: Bagnaia vs Martin, Sepang

The latest addition to MotoGP™’s all-time classics: Bagnaia and Martin going blow for blow across three incredible opening laps. Bagnaia had to win, he did, and now, the title fight rumbles on to the season finale in Barcelona.
