Jorge Martin has been crowned the 2024 MotoGP™ World Champion! After a phenomenal season filled with record-breaking performances, the Spanish sensation claimed the title at the Solidarity GP. A P3 finish was enough to defeat 2022-3 World Champion, Francesco Bagnaia, for the crown. Dominating the Tissot Sprint with seven victories, and taking three Sunday race wins and a consistent run of podium finishes, Martin’s journey to the top has been testament to the lessons learned competing at the pinnacle. Here’s a closer look at the numbers and achievements that define Jorge Martin’s championship-winning season.
The first Independent Team rider to win the MotoGP™ crown
In the MotoGP™ era, no Independent Team rider has ever lifted the crown... until now. Martin becomes the first to do so in this era. Valentino Rossi did it all the way back in 2001 before the new category was introduced.
From Moto3™ to MotoGP™ Champion
Martin’s Championship journey highlights his incredible career progression. He is only the second rider in history to win both a Moto3™ and MotoGP™ world title, after Joan Mir became the first. Adding to his unique accomplishments, Martin is the first-ever former Red Bull MotoGP™ Rookies Cup champion to clinch the premier class crown, further showcasing the programme’s success in nurturing future champions.
Ducati dominance: a historic partnership
Martin’s victory strengthens Ducati’s dominance in MotoGP™. He becomes the third Ducati rider to win a premier class Championship, joining Casey Stoner (2007) and Francesco Bagnaia, who is the only rider to do it back-to-back in 2022 and 2023.
Consistency is key
Martin’s title victory is a testament to consistency and strategy. Despite not being the season’s most victorious rider, he secured enough podiums and points to claim the Championship. This makes Martin the fourth rider in MotoGP™ history to win the title without the most wins in a season, following Nicky Hayden (2006), Jorge Lorenzo (2012), and Marc Marquez (2013 and 2017, tied with Andrea Dovizioso). In 2024, Bagnaia holds the most Grand Prix wins with 11.
Career Milestones
With eight premier class wins, all achieved with Ducati, Jorge Martin ranks as the fourth most successful Ducati rider in MotoGP™ history. His 32 premier class podiums place him behind Andrea Dovizioso (40), Casey Stoner (42) and current factory rider Francesco Bagnaia (51) on Ducati’s all-time list.
A Record-Breaking MotoGP™ Season
Jorge Martin’s 2024 campaign is a season for the history books. He secured 16 podium finishes, including three GP race wins, setting a new record for the most podiums in a single season by a Ducati rider, also shared by Bagnaia (16). He also took the most Tissot Sprint podiums in 2024: 16.
The oldest first-time MotoGP™ Champion
At 26 years and 293 days old, Martin has become the oldest rider to secure his maiden MotoGP™ world title since the premier class's modern format began in 2002. This achievement surpasses the previous record set by Bagnaia, who won his first title at 25 years and 296 days in 2022. Martin’s victory also makes him the 30th different rider to win a MotoGP™ World Championship and only the fifth Spaniard to do so, joining legends like Alex Criville, Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team), Jorge Lorenzo, and Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™).
